Who should have this test?

The Better2Know instant Gonorrhoea test is suitable for both men and women.  Gonorrhoea is a very infectious STI.  Most people with Gonorrhoea do not have any symptoms.  It can lead to infertility in women and reduced fertility in men, if it is not treated promptly and properly.  The test is suitable for both men and women who are concerned that they have caught gonorrhoea through unprotected vaginal intercourse, and men who have given unprotected anal intercourse.

How long should I wait until I have the test?

For gonorrhoea, you should wait at least 14 days since any incident that you are concerned about before you have the test.

What will happen at my appointment?

Your Better2Know clinician will do their best to make your feel comfortable.  They will confirm which test or tests that you have chosen, and ask you if you have any questions.  They will then discuss sample collection.  The Gonorrhoea test needs a swab sample. For women, this is a vaginal swab, for men this is a urethral swab.  You will be able to collect your own sample if you would prefer.  Your clinician will then process your sample, and run your test.

How long do results take?

Results take around twenty minutes.  The test device will return a control line when the test is complete.  If there are two lines the result is positive.  If there is only one line, then the result is negative.

What happens if I test positive?

Gonorrhoea should be treated as soon as possible to prevent damage to your health, and to prevent onward transmission to your next partner.  Gonorrhoea can cause longer term health and fertility complications if it is not treated early.  Better2Know can help you to access appropriate treatment.  You should repeat the test two weeks after you have completed your treatment.  This is because gonorrhoea is becoming resistant to some antibiotics, and so it is important to ensure that you have had the right combination of antibiotics and the infection has been cured.
