Who should have this test?

This test is suitable for both men and women who are at risk of HIV, or who want to know their HIV status.  It is suitable whether you are concerned that you have HIV from sexual or non-sexual contact such as a needle stick injury.  This is a fourth-generation instant HIV test.  It tests for both the p-24 antigen and HIV 1 and HIV 2 antibodies, making it very accurate from 26 days after any potential incident.  This is up to two months earlier than other instant HIV tests.

How long should I wait until I have the test?

You should wait at least 26 days since any incident that you are concerned about before having this test.  If it is earlier than this, then please choose our Early Detection Screen which is a laboratory based test, but gives you your results from just ten days after any incident that you are concerned about.

What will happen at my appointment?

Your Better2Know clinician will confirm which test or tests you have chosen, and ask you if you have any questions.  They will then discuss sample collection with you.  This test needs a small blood sample.  This can be collected from a finger stick.  This test is ideal if you are afraid of needles.  Your clinician will then process your sample and run the test.

How long do results take?

Results take around 20 minutes from when the test starts.  A control line will appear on the test device when the tests is complete.  One line means the result is negative, two or more lines means that the test is reactive.

What happens if my test is reactive?

If your HIV test is reactive, then your clinician will collect a blood sample from you.  This will then be sent to the laboratory for further analysis.  This is all included in the price of your Better2Know test.  If this confirmation test is positive, then we will refer you to an HIV advisor who will be able to help you to protect your long-term health.
